Compulsory Courses for Work with Laboratory Animals
All staff working experimentally with research animals (including all vertebrates, octopuses and lampreys) need to have completed a course in Laboratory Animal Science before the start of the project.

The course should include animal research ethics, 3 R, national legislation, care-taking/handling etc for the species the experiments will be carried out on. Courses given at other universities might be sufficient, but this will be evaluated on an individual basis and the courses would often have to be complemented with the ‘Swedish legislation & Ethics’ module.

The courses provided at the department consist of a web-based theoretical part, followed by an individual practical part. Project leaders who are only planning the projects and not performing the actual procedures, will only need to have completed the theoretical part.

At the moment, courses for the following animal groups are available:

  • Aquatic Amphibians
  • Birds
  • Fish, including zebrafish
  • Rodents and Lagomorphs
  • Non-Human Primates

If you intend to work with a group of animals that is not listed above, you will be registered on the “Rodents” course, and requested to take those modules that are of a more general nature. Depending on the course, there might also be lectures to complement the course.
